I worry that your addition of our own men even also say, well, of course, it means we have to do more for some groups than for others. The change of tune and of emphasis within the democratic party is one of the reasons why despite the unpopularity of Donald Trump, Democrats have trouble really expanding the vote in such a way as to inflict a crushing defeat on him. I would disagree with the characterization that it's the democratic shift to talking about race more explicitly that made us not defeat Trump by 7 million votes.

Heather McGhee is an author and policy advocate with a focus on reducing inequality. She is Board Chair for the organization Color Of Change and a former CEO of the think tank Demos. McGhee is the author of The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together .
