The Origins of Hindu Pantheism

The Rigveda is regarded by scholars as the starting point of Hindu pantheism. Prusya, a cosmic being, was sacrificed by the gods in order to supply from his body the pieces from which all aspects of the world would arise. In what could be seen retrospectively as a major theological breakthrough, near the end of the Vedas, is the concept of Brahman. This motif of the dismembered deity, whose body is partitioned to provide the material to create the world, is a theme that we find across world mythologies.
