Karl Polani's Responsibility in the World War II
In the essay from which i have been quoting, he vows to bear eternal witness to the shame of the present times. In facing and investigating this shame he says that the way is to be found. The prophetic note is sometimes more muted in his later scholarship, but it is never entirely absent. He feels a very strong sense of responsibility of his whole generation for what was going on during the war,. Nobody is able to take responsibility for falling prices, for unemployment, for a lot of consequences which system produces. So freedom means for him that you are able to act out of your own responsibility.
