Strick was ordered to leave the ship because a rather more important officer had demanded access to his cabin. The terms of his voyage home were quite clear. He decided at sherburg, he sent a telegram to the india office from the ship and said he was not going back to england. Left the ship at sherburg and walked to paris, 250 mile, and decided what he was going to do but join the french foreign legion.
