The History of Slavery

On the eve of the haytian revolution, there were more than 500 thousand slaves in san domain. This was not a society that had slaves. This was a slave society. Newly arrived white men were all too happy to marry free colored women because they were often very well connected and came with property which vaulted them into the propertied classes. After the end of the seven years war in 17 63, ench colonial policy would change and create a legal category of non-whites. We'll talk about why they did this and what the consequences were for everyone.
