I think a lot of times young writers might be wary of mentors. Did it feel like paternalistic or something like that? Well, I remember that I had a boyfriend at the time who didn't enjoy Tom Jones' car. So maybe I was looking more for encouragement or to figure out how to place myself in a context. Because I didn't come by that context naturally. I had to locate it.
