The Theory of Continuous Groups
There's a theory of these kinds of continuous groups. The group associated with a circle can be generated by this infinitesimal transformation that you just turn the suckle a little tiny bit. For a sphere, there are several so called inf initesimal generators of the symmetry group of the sphere. If you do it enough times, eventually the circle will come back to what it started from again.
