Designing a Great User Interface?

What makes some people able to come up with a great interface? It's really, you know, needing to have that foundation in the research. I think there is also a visual element. Somehow you're able to visualize what all that data would translate into. The fact that that design looks really cool, but, you know,. I don't want to use a cool design. I want to get my job.
