The Slavery of Saint Dominicgue Before the Uprising

On the eve of revolution saint domingue society was something like 90 percent enslaved peoples probably 50 to 60 percent of the entire enslaved population had been born in africa. Planters worked their slaves to death with an average life expectancy of somewhere from three to seven years and then going back and replenishing their forces by buying more slaves. The slave population which is 90 percent of the island it's about 50 50 or 60 40 slave-born versus slaves born in in the colony which are referred to as creoles.
