How to Reduce the Climate Impact of Contrails

The biggest additional warming effects come from the contrails formation as well as the NOx emissions which affect the chemistry of the atmosphere. We have simulated that if you reduce SUT number emissions by 80% you get a decrease in the climate impact by about 60%. Ulrika's reasoning seems pretty straightforward. Emissions from planes make contrail clouds therefore cleaner fuels mean fewer emissions. A 60% reduction is a big incentive to produce cleaner fuels and yes there is ongoing research in this area. Another stumbling block is that there's no method to measure contrails in the way you can measure carbon says Marianne Lund.
