The Origins of Slavery Patrols

The institution of slave patrols evolved and formalized over time. Missouri entered the union in 1821 as a slave state, racism was obviously baked into the new polity from the very beginning. These patrols had permission to administer from 10 to 30 lashes to slaves found strolling about without pass from his master mistress or overseer.
