Haley Gomez became interested in cosmic dust while doing her PhD. Her supervisor challenged the status quo of science by suggesting a new explanation. He suggested it could be stars that are very massive and explode violently. This would explain all the dust you see in galaxies, she says. But there is still not enough to account for everything we know about space.
