The State? Is That Really the Case?
Trying to disentangle the state from early china seems more difficult than it would be for a lot of other civilizations of this particular age. The term trumis gogia, which comes from japanese, literally means like polity, house or home. In the shang they don't even use that term and instead call them settlement. So basically, whether it's a hamlet of like 50 people or a metropolis of a hundred thousand, they're all called dai.
