The Characteristics of a Flintlock Pistol
This large, long flintlock pistol is of the sort that was customarily used for dueling. It would have been mainly symbolic and decorative, more than for use as an actual weapon. A pistol like this was mainly commissioned for its symbolic value as a status symbol. In the 1700s and early 1800s, it took on the form of a dangerous pastime for high status gentlemen.
