Signals on Dependency on Companies Like Apple, Amazon, and Google
The surveillance business model itself trends toward consolidation. Every startup, every broadly distributed app that isn't owned by these companies is like floating on their infrastructure at some level. We do a lot of work to make sure that neither the signal nor the owners of those infrastructures can see anything they're not supposed to be seeing. But if we want to actually provide service that allows people who are not first and foremost driven by an ideological commitment to have privacy, then we need to communicate privately and intimately with them.
