The Importance of Hope in the Past

We can also use it in the past continuous as well, like when you're waiting for somebody to ask you a question. You might also hear people use it with the past perfect. It doesn't necessarily have to be in the past tense. For example, I hope my brother got the job. We sometimes use hope as an insult, like negative wishes that we want to happen but are not realistic.
