The harpsichord only functions best in its natural acoustic space, like a chapel or empty church. The plectrum going over the string on the way up doesn't sound the same way as it does on the way down is because of this exceedingly clever harpsichords mechanism. Before plastic, they used quills from crows, ravens, sometimes vultures.
