This is the controversial account of the first vision, right? And yet when I teach undergrads, this is the account that seems to resonate the most with them. This account finds residents with my students because it teaches really simply two general principles. If you'll approach him, the God isn't the sort of person who will strike you down. He wants to forgive you of what you've done wrong and what Joseph Smith did is something that anybody could do. That's why I love this account is because I too am a convicted center.
