If the russians can get past odessa and connect the southern land border all the way to maldova, then the russian backed government in maldova will simply just acquiesce. They would still be an independent country but essentially they would become predominantly like belleruse. The sea is a critical juncture for supplies and a and resources to make it into ukraine. Whoever controls the sea controls ukraine's future.
