Detraction Is a Kind of Murder

The detractor kills his own soul and that of the person who listens. He also takes away the civil life of the person whom he slanders. Detraction uttered in the shape of a joke is still more cruel than all the rest. Those who preface their detractions by protesting that they have respect for those about whom they speak, perhaps interspersing little compliments and jokes are the subtlest and most venomous of all detractors.
