I wrote to the LRB and said could I write a piece about pangolins? And Mary Kay Wilmer's, who is then the editor, said yes. So for the next few years, every about four or five times a year, I wrote an essay about something living and endangered. It just had to be that one of the animals is a species or a subspecies that isn't endangered. The book also wants to offer a sense of the non-obvious delights of the world. You know, I would not want to meet a coconut crab in the dark, but I am grateful for their presence.
