In the thirties charles kendelberger argued that having a hegemon might have or could have avoided a great depression of 1929. Many of the lessons learned from the great depression have been applied in positive ways to the post-war economy, says David Frum. "There is a reason for this if you think about all these claims about american hegemony what they really come down to is a demand and a justification for special privileges for the united states"
