The internet helped accelerate the extraction of black culture, Meredith says. Non-black people learn how to take care of what they call their frizzy, unkempt hair by watching a video of a black person doing a natural hairstyle tutorial on YouTube. The way TikTok has showed me so many white women with curly hair realizing that they have curly hair is an interesting point about how that kind of observational dynamic isn't only harmful to black people, but to the people I think we tend to describe as culture vultures.
