How I Became a Feminist in My Teenage Years
When did you first become aware of patriarchy? I was conscious of my being a rare thing when I was studying at law school because there were so few women. When I started practicing at the bar as a baby barrister I started seeing the ways in which women were treated differently. And if you conform to a very decent stereotype of what a good woman looked like then that would make it all right. But if you were some sort of moody woman or difficult woman or a woman who was a lesbian or an aberrant, then you really got it in the teeth. So I started seeing all of this stuff and then I started getting involved in domestic violence things.
