I'm curious if that is because trauma sort of already creates that gap or like loosens the spirit web a bit in some way so that it's easier to chip off the piece that you are trying to get. Yeah it might be similar because we know that Ellen was beaten as were many children I think a little bit before puberty It's somewhere around eight to like 10 years old a lot of children on Skadria are beaten in order to try to manifest their allomantic abilities. Maybe there is a kind of trauma activates the spirit web in a way they like highlights the magical bits that they are trying to take off  so it's a little bit like a homey beacon.
