The Story of Homer Plessy
Homer Plessy was a light-skinned Haitian and French man who had lived in New Orleans since the 1790s. The Separate Car Act of 1892 made it illegal for black people to ride on trains with white passengers. A private detective from the train station decided to play his part by arresting Plessy when he refused to move into one of the whites-only cars. "If you won't remove yourself to the colored car that I'm going to have to remove you from this train," says the police officer as they arrest him.
