The number 666 is a number that forever comes short of seven, which is perfection. It's repeated three times because it's an effort to on the part of those who follow the beast to identify themselves with the beast as his subjects and servants. And so the person who braces the market the beast is someone who will perish by serving that one who is God's enemy. The most essential friends are probably on the better track when they tie this to technology but it's an identifier that shows that you are a servant of that dragon who opposes Christ in this kingdom.
