How Does the Consumption of Positional Goods Affect Mental Well-Being?

The driving force behind armaments, expenditure arms races, is the fear of falling behind your rival nations. Having fewer bombs than they have is a much bigger threat than having fewer of other goods. We spend less on hospitals and schools in order to fund expenditures on armaments. When we all spend more on arms, nobody's more secure than before - that's completely uncontroversial.

Professor Frank is the emeritus Henrietta Johnson Louis Professor of Management at Cornell University and holds an MA in statistics and a Ph.D. in Economics from UC Berkeley.
