A large number of contemporary kind of music theology ethnomusicology books take the take the form which is really a form adapted from a dissertation style. So you have chapters that work independently of one another but build towards a larger argument that's laid out in each chapter. I wanted to try to make it something that was accessible to a general public and that would read as a complete narrative from beginning to end so that you go somewhere over the course of the book.
