Is This an Ethnic Conflict?
Before 2014, there was overwhelming support in Crimea and substantial support in the Donbass for leaving Ukraine and joining Russia. In other Russian speaking areas of the East and South, it wasn't that people wanted to leave,. But they certainly disapproved of attempts to Ukrainianize their culture and language. The pro-Ukrainian population has largely left those areas; a lot of the provinces are not even part of the referendum. It's because we're not seeing the complexity that people don't understand the sense in which this is an ethnic conflict, right?
