He was a military attache to napoleon the third, famously known for being the worst napoleon. During this time that he witnessed a crimean war, but did not actively take part in it. This has part to do with his father's doing of fluffing up his son, because he was minister of war. But also lopez himself, when he became president, and you know, had to church up his resume as we have all done from time to time.
