Volunteers in the netherlands were asked to chew different levels of gum. The aim was to see how much energy a certain action takes, rather than digesting or saliva production. This means that we are getting as close as possible to measuring the energetics of chewing and not digestion. But what must t be remembered is that these are gums and not foods.
