The Dismissal of Poetry
The way that she writes is absolutely, I think, in conversation with this idea of dismissal. Smith really lent into this sense of being someone you couldn't get a handle on. She would take these little overheard snatches of conversation or these sayings which had this wonderful weight as far as she was concerned. They were cliched, but she'd look into them and see something in them that other people hadn't noticed. And she'd give them prominence.
