The way we talk about class seems to me to undermine the basis of any kind of class solidarity. The idea that you could have a nasty portation of people who come to this country arbitrarily simply because they have the wrong papers is an issue I burn with indignation about. Ten years ago very very few people would have thought that as moral or acceptable apart from those on the fringes of politics and the far right now it's become a mainstream view. But when we talk about the white working class we not really referring to their class position we're referring much more to their whiteness, rather than being working class.
