Is the Explanation of Banter a Sign of Strength?
I wonder whether this comes down to football being sexist. I think that men in general feel comfortable with banter because there's a safety net of not having to show your emotions and show how you really feel about somebody or something. For many men, they may be feeling uncomfortable with the idea of being able to connect... we've been conditioned to believe that's a sign of weakness rather than a sign of strength. And then they excuse it as humor rather than actually what they're trying to do is belittle somebody or put them down. Humor's inclusive. Bantery's often got a crueler edge to it.
