The Selfish Gene
There's a place in your book where somebody read the selfish gene and it just made him, he said he couldn't sleep for three days. It was such a barren kind of bleak picture of nature without purpose that he found it like intensely demotivating. Even the most ardent critic of the genes I view concedes that that is a kind of practical place for adopting this viewpoint.
