The Tax System of the First and Second Estates

Most members of the nobility could justify through some forgotten right or tageous title, why they did n't have to pay a particular tax. Those that couldn't often bought government officers through the process of venality, which would give them the exemption they were looking for. To avoid paying tax was a distinction reserved for the elites. For those who aspired to join them, these tax exempting offices were purchased not only because of their economic benefit, but because of the social status benefit.
