Tofield and the Spirit of Religion in the United States
Tofield famously said that liberty didn't consist an unregulated license but in self-control, self-mastery. He balanced his Catholicism with an ecumenicalism and to what degree his observation is about religion and liberty or still relevant. Tofield's use of the word democracy, you know, or in French, isn't quite the same as we ordinarily use. So by democracy he meant an egalitarian social state which has no aristocracy.
