Powerful earthquakes hit southeastern Turkey in February 2023, killing more than 57,000 people. According to the UN, the earthquakes caused an estimated $34 billion in direct physical damages. I asked Carlos what steps BBVA took in the immediate aftermath of the disaster. "It has mostly been to try to get people to safety as quickly as we could," he said.

The low-carbon transition will require some major innovations, a rapid buildout of existing technologies, and significantly more financing, the recently released synthesis report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) states.
