The History of Slavery
Jakob Michigama: Sensorship and ruthless suppression of free speech was part and parcel of slavery. In 1836, Virginia criminalized publications that were intent on persuading persons of color to rebel or denying the right of masters to property in their slaves. "No one saw it, I think, as a suppression of free Speech," he says.
