The Rise of Professional Medicine
The most important in the Greek world is probably Hippocrates of Kos, born around 2,500 years ago. He and other medical writers thought that sickness could be explained entirely in terms of changes in the body, not the gods. Medical writers like him set out to diagnose what exactly it was that was going wrong inside of a patient's body by looking at these signs or what we would today call symptoms.
