The Tea House of the August Moon by George H. Kerr
A Pale of Oysters is arguably the most important English-language fiction work about Taiwan. George H. Kerr's detailed and impassioned account of KMT Miss Rule has a good claim for the non-fiction equivalent. The title refers not only to the Taiwanese people's crushing disappointment, when they realized that KMT Rule was worse than that of the Japanese,. but also to American culpability. It's heartbreaking to read how so many Taiwanese wanted and thought they might get independence as a United Nations trusteeship under American guardianship.
