We often get the impression that when christopher columbus arrived in the new world, he and the spaniards obliterated the taino populations with disease and enslavement. While we know that certainly did happen, the way we often read and hear about it is that the taina people and all their culture just disappeared. But it really sounds like, from the way you describe it - both the taini and their culture continue to exist to day.
