Anthony Grayling: The castration took the form of removal of Abar's testicles, because when that happens in Arab life, it doesn't remove sexual potency. So he could continue to have sexual relations with the opportunities provided itself. It was a terrific scandal at the time. And for Abelard himself, probably, but I defer here to Michael on this, probably a terrible humiliating, embarrassing blow. Here was somebody who, whether or not he had been successful earlier on in his career in material terms, nevertheless regarded himself pretty highly as we see from his autobiographical remarks. He describes himself, I think, as the leading philosopher of the day. How were the mighty foreign?
