The Greek Catholic Church - The Ukrainian Catholic Church

The Ukrainian Catholic Church is the institution which was founded in 1596 by the Union of Brest. The Habsburgs took this church under their wing and they renamed it the Greek Catholic Church. Metropolitan Andrzej Shiptitski rescued more than 100 Jewish children in the St. George's complex during the Holocaust. He died just as Soviet power was returning. When the Soviets re-annexed what had been western Ukraine, it's now western Ukraine again, what had been Poland, they dissolved the GreekCatholic Church in 1946.
