The Reality of Slavery
The fugitive slave law made slavery real personal and vividly alive in the eyes of northerners who had previously been able to look away. Frederick Douglas said as odious and indefensible as it was the fugitive slave law was a great service to the anti-slavery movement. We are very good at convincing ourselves that we're not implicated in crimes or immoralities that are being committed by people somewhere else. I mean some people are trying to make us more aware of this but we're all pretty good at closing our eyes to these kind of realities.
