In some ways, the way I think about the conceptualization is following Joanna Sartori's work on binary variables. That just because you have a binary variable doesn't mean you cannot have variations. So within systems that count secular, there are those that are more or less secular. But I think there is also a conceptual line that separates secular and non-secular concepts,. A threshold after which the idea of secularization does not hold anymore.
