Humans are relatively poor listeners compared to other species on the tree of life. Our hearing is typically confined to a pretty narrow band of frequencies. So in nature, silence is an illusion. There's actually a lot of noise being made all the time and we're not able to pick it up. The mating dance of the peacock has been known for millennia but only recently have scientists realized that when male peacocks are spreading their tails, they are making a powerful inphersonic with their tails.
