When I feel very frustrated about quantum gravity, I like to go back and read history. And it's very clear that Einstein thought that the first job when you want to enter a new domain of theoretical physics is to discover and invent principles. So for Einstein, there was no unified space and time. Minkowski invented this idea of space-time. But Einstein was a model of his principles or his postulates. And I've taken the view that we don't know the principles of quantum gravity.
