The Rise of the Mixed Race Community in Haiti

By 1798, Andre Rigo was probably the most prominent mixed race leader in the colony. He and his comrades were not happy with the direction the country was taking under Louvertour's leadership. Many believed such an alliance could only result in the marginalization of the mixed race community. Despite Rigo's public embrace of republican ideals, he still privately saw himself as the natural rulers of Haiti.
